The University of Wisconsin-Marinette will hold its annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the campus’ Herbert L. Williams Theatre. More than 90 students earned two-year degrees from UW-Marinette during the 2016-17 academic year, many of whom will be participating in the ceremony. Four international students also will be receiving completion certificates from Youth For Understanding, a non-profit educational organization serving more than 50 countries.
UW-Marinette alumna and 2002 Stephenson (Mich.) High School graduate Shelby Beck will give the alumni commencement address. She is executive assistant to the CEO at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fox Valley, Appleton, Wis. She began working at the organization in 2016.
After earning her associate of arts and science degree from UW-Marinette in 2004, Beck enrolled at UW-Green Bay, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications in 2007. After college, she began working as a fourth-generation insurance agent alongside her father at Phillippo Insurance Agency in Stephenson.
In 2014, Beck founded Project Give, a nonprofit organization dedicated to organizing and executing charitable projects in the area. Some of the projects and numbers of people served since Project Give was started included: Yellow Shirt Project (more than 1,000); Real Girls Club (more than 100); and Tree of Light (more than 500).
Timothy Porter, a 2015 graduate of Menominee (Mich.) High School, will give the commencement address and represent the UW-Marinette class of 2017.
UW-Marinette is located at 750 W. Bay Shore St., Marinette.
