Sitting alone in a café, Jean is bothered by the insistent ringing of a stranger’s cell phone.  When he doesn’t answer it, she realizes he is dead. Compelled to answer the ringing phone, Jean becomes drawn into Gordon’s world and embarks on a journey in which she meets his mother, wife, mistress, brother, and, in a fantastical and comical turn of events, Gordon himself. Soon Jean finds herself falling in love with Gordon’s brother Dwight and even participating in some of Gordon’s unsavory and illegal business dealings. Will Jean be able to extricate herself from her growing fascination with a dead man in order to begin a real relationship with Dwight? Or will her curiosity trap her in Gordon’s dangerous world?

The answers to these compelling questions will be revealed during Dead Man’s Cell Phone, a comedy by Sarah Ruhl, which opens April 8 at UW-Marinette.

Cast members include local actors Catherine VanVooren as Jean, James Porras II as Gordon (the dead man), Travis Meyer as Dwight, Carolyn McGuire as Mrs. Gottlieb, Hayley Maxwell as Hermia, and Katie Falk as Carlotta and the Stranger.

Ruhl’s satirical, non-realistic comedy is directed by Rebecca Stone Thornberry, assistant professor of communications-theatre arts, at UW-Marinette. The production staff includes scenic and sound designer John Thornberry, lighting designer Lee Bunting, and costume designer Annalisa Mines. Brittany Welch is the assistant director with Benjamin Kmecheck as the second assistant director. The stage manager is Kenan Pulver and the assistant stage manager is Hope Process.

The play contains mature language.
