The official opening of the new LGBT Center @UW-Marinette will be celebrated during a special community reception at UW-Marinette on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 5 to 7 p.m., Room 145, in the university’s main building. The public is invited to attend the event, which will include light refreshments.
“The center is a community-focused organization aimed at improving the lives of LGBT people in Marinette, Menominee and Oconto counties,” said Amy Reddinger, associate professor of English at UW-Marinette and director of the center.
Several months in the making, the LGBT Center is housed in a cozy, 12- by 13-foot, converted office in the campus’ main building.
“We are working closely with a group of community providers, including social workers and counselors, to help build a network of resources and support,” said Reddinger, when describing the services that will be available at the center.
“In particular, a collaboration with Rainbow House, our community domestic violence agency, has been pivotal in starting our Providers’ Group and inspiring the creation of the center,” said Reddinger, who is listed as a contact in the Tri-City Area United Way’s 311 directory and regularly takes phone calls from LGBT community members.
The LGBT Center @UW Marinette will be open during the spring semester from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday and by appointment by calling 715-735-4300, ext. 4310, or by sending an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org. “We want people to feel free to drop by or to schedule an appointment,” Reddinger said.
UW-Marinette is located at 750 W. Bay Shore St., Marinette.
