UW-Marinette Honors Graduates

By UW-Marinette
Associate of Arts and Science degrees and certificates of completion were conferred on 79 graduates at UW-Marinette’s annual commencement ceremony, Wednesday, May 21 in the Herbert L. Williams Theatre. Students who completed degree requirements in fall of 2013, spring of 2014, and those who will complete requirements by the end of the summer participated in the ceremony. In addition, four international students received certificates of completion for the academic program and the English as a Second Language program.

Dean Paula Langteau welcomed graduates, families, friends, faculty and staff to the evening ceremony acknowledging the importance of the support given to students in their pursuit of a college degree.

Marinette County Circuit Court Judge James Morrison gave the commencement address. Morrison was appointed by Governor Scott Walker in March 2012 and was re-elected in April of 2013. He received his undergraduate degree in biology from the College of St. Thomas (now the University of St. Thomas) in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1970 before receiving his Juris Doctorate and graduating cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1973. In 1977, he co-founded the Morrison Law Firm, a general practice firm based in Marinette.

Morrison has been very active in pro bono work and has been involved in many community organizations, including the Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Marinette-Menominee and the River Cities Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Marinette Kiwanis, a two-term board member of the Marinette-Menominee Community Foundation and served on the Marinette United Way Board.
Additionally he has taught at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Marinette, taught Political Science for UW-Marinette for many years, and was a member of the UW-Marinette Foundation (where he served 2 years as its president).

The Kaplan Fellow message was delivered by Tonya Meisner, associate lecturer of Mathematics. Angela Labunski presented the class message and  Boxuan “Jeremy” Xia gave the International student message.
