UW-Marinette students and staff earn honors

The Marinette Menominee Area Chamber of Commerce recognized two UW-Marinette students for their leadership and academic accomplishments, respectively, at the university’s spring awards banquet.

Skylee Lara received the 2016 Chamber of Commerce Student Leadership Award, given to a student who has shown leadership skills throughout the year, as well as sharing passion about the campus with fellow students. The freshman from Wausaukee, Wis., tutored other students in English and math during the year. She also served as president of the Student Senate/Campus Activities Board and served on the campus’ Undergraduate Research and Performance Conference Committee.

Travis Champeau received the 2016 Chamber of Commerce Academic Excellence Award, determined by overall grade point average and credits taken at UW-Marinette. The sophomore from Menominee, Mich., earned 83 credits and had a 3.86 GPA at UW-Marinette. He plans to transfer to UW Oshkosh in the fall and pursue a degree in marketing.

Many other students also were recognized at UW-Marinette’s annual awards banquet for their academic success and contributions to the campus.

Departmental Awards, based on achievement in the discipline, were given to nine students:

  • Gender Studies – Marcy Pearson, Menominee, Mich., and Nicole Schmidt, Menominee Mich.;

  • English – Marcy Pearson, Menominee, Mich.;

  • Accounting – Iris Parrish, Menominee, Mich.; Jason Slawinski, Marinette, Wis., and Yangi Hu, China;

  • Spanish – Alex Johnson, Stephenson, Mich.;

  • Acting – Catherine VanVooren, Peshtigo, Wis.;

  • Technical Theatre – Kenan Pulver, Menominee, Mich;

  • Biological Sciences – Becky Berry, Marinette, Wis.

Several staff and faculty members were recognized at the awards program for their service to students and the campus:
